1. Erasmus+ OLS – What is Online Language Support?
Online Language Support (OLS) is a free language program designed for Erasmus+ participants.
Its goal is to allow participants to improve their language skills and ensure a higher-quality mobility experience.
Participants can improve the foreign language they will use for study or internship abroad before, during, and at the end of their mobility.
OLS is available in the following languages, which are used by approximately 90% of all Erasmus+ participants:
German (DE), English (EN), Spanish (ES), French (FR), Italian (IT), Dutch (NL).
OLS provides Online Language Assessments and Online Language Courses for participants in Erasmus+ programs lasting at least two months (Student Mobility, Internship Mobility, European Voluntary Service).
OLS is personalized; participants can measure their skills in the mobility language online and develop them through courses accessible anywhere via computer.
In addition to individual activities, OLS provides collaborative learning environments (Live Coaching, tutoring in small groups, etc.) and sessions moderated by instructors where participants can share experiences.
2. Why do we take Erasmus+ Online Language Support (OLS)?
OLS is designed to help participants improve the language of the study or work environment abroad for a more effective mobility experience.
Since insufficient language proficiency is a major challenge in Erasmus+ mobilities, OLS is a free opportunity offered to bridge these gaps in an accessible environment.
3. Who can benefit from Erasmus+ OLS?
Any Higher Education Institution student participating in Erasmus Learning or Erasmus Internship Mobility can benefit from this support.
4. What are the benefits of Erasmus+ OLS?
The biggest advantage is that it is accessible anytime and anywhere. Courses can be followed 24/7 as long as there is an internet connection via laptop or tablet.
To maximize the quality of the courses, participants should ensure their audio system and headphones are working properly.
Each participant follows a personalized curriculum. You are free to choose specific modules and practice as much as needed to improve your specific skills.
Animations and videos for listening, reading, writing, and speaking are based on real-life scenarios. All participants who complete the OLS assessment are entitled to follow the language courses.
5. What is the purpose of Erasmus+ OLS?
OLS allows participants to measure their language skills before and after the mobility.
If deemed appropriate by the participant or the sending institution, OLS courses can be followed throughout the mobility period.
Taking the Language Assessment is mandatory; however, a low score does not prevent you from participating in the mobility.
Erasmus+ Online Language Assessment
1. What happens if I do not take the OLS Assessment?
Completing the assessment before and after the mobility is mandatory. If the pre-mobility assessment is not completed, the mobility cannot take place.
If the post-mobility assessment is not completed, the final installment of the grant will not be paid, and the return process cannot be finalized as the end-of-mobility documents will be considered incomplete.
ARTICLE 6 – ONLINE LANGUAGE SUPPORT
6.1. If the main language of instruction or work is English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, or Spanish (except native speakers), the participant shall undergo an online assessment before and at the end of the mobility.
6.3. The payment of the final installment of financial support is subject to the completion of the mandatory online assessment at the end of the mobility period.
2. When should I take the OLS Assessment?
You must take it twice: as the first mandatory step before the mobility and the last step after the mobility.
You will receive an email invitation containing your username and password to log into the system. For more information, visit erasmusplusols.eu.
3. Which skills are measured by the OLS Assessment?
Designed according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), it measures five skills:
Grammar Competence: Ability to use target language grammar.
Lexical Competence: Ability to use vocabulary, idioms, and phrases.
Semantic Competence: Understanding meanings of word sequences.
Listening Comprehension: Understanding and responding to spoken language.
Reading Comprehension: Reading and understanding written texts.
The assessment consists of 70 questions and takes approximately 40-50 minutes. It is an adaptive system; the level of the next question is determined by your previous answer.
4. What happens with my assessment results?
Your result is not sent to the host institution or enterprise. It only concerns the participant and the sending institution.
Results are important for determining if you need OLS courses. A low score does not stop your mobility but indicates that you should participate in courses for a more productive experience.
Erasmus+ Online Language Course
1. How can I follow the OLS Courses?
If you score between A1 and B1 in the first assessment, the system automatically invites you to the course.
If you score between B2 and C2, you may contact your institution to join the course in the same language or request a course in the local language of the host country (if available in OLS).
2. What are the OLS Courses like?
They are designed around three learning pillars:
Immersive Practice: Exposure to multimedia animations and daily life scenarios with native speakers.
Practice: Developing skills by listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
Spiral Learning: Topics are explained continuously, repeated regularly, and revisited throughout the course.
3. Which levels are covered?
For Beginners (A1): Covers essential vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation for a new language.
For Intermediate Students: Focuses on Professional/Business Language.
Argumentation: A video lesson teaching how to express ideas and debate in a foreign language.
Vocational Courses: Specialized modules such as "Meetings," "Job Descriptions," "Business Correspondence," and "Banking."
4. Interaction with Instructors and Students
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses): Sessions open to all participants.
Tutoring Sessions: Small groups (1 to 6 people) for direct communication with a teacher on thematic or general topics.
Forum: A section moderated by a teacher for collaborative learning and sharing tips.
